Pilot and former First Class stewardess Jon and Sara Saunby are about to bring state of the art wine appreciation to Manchester with the launch of Salut Wines, a wine bar and wine merchants that is using Manchester’s largest wine preservation and dispensation machine.
The business was supported by a BFS Business Loan which are drawn from a £24m fund delivered by Business Finance Solutions (BFS) that is designed to help businesses across Greater Manchester to find access finance, grow, and create or protect jobs.
Sara and Jon from Salford set up Salut Wines to bring a unique concept to the city by marrying a traditional wine merchants with a wine bar that offers 32 different wines by the glass, all dispensed using a state of the art wine dispensing and preservation system that is set to transform how wine is sold and served. The wine dispenser technology allows customers to try a 50ml sample of wine, before choosing to buy a 125ml or 175ml glass or a full bottle to drink or take home. As well as offering the widest range of dispensed wines in Manchester, the Salut Wines system also preserves the wine for over 30 days, ensuring that customers enjoy it in optimum condition. A further ten free pour wines will also be available by the glass.
Jon and Sara will be creating a relaxed and friendly environment that offers customers an opportunity to explore new wine, to drink in or take home. From the venue on Cooper Street in the city centre they will also be selling food platters to complement the wine as well as a small selection of carefully chosen artisan beers and spirits; hosting wine tasting events and industry recognized wine education programmes. The couple has invested £150k of their own money into the venture to add to the Business Loan that they received from BFS.
Sara said: “There can be a lot of mystery surrounding wine and people tend to find one or two that they like and stick with them. Our big difference is that we are coming at this from the customers’ side and we want Salut Wines to be somewhere that people can come to relax, have a bite to eat and feel free to explore the wine and get some help if they want it. The wine preservation and dispensation system has already proved very popular across Europe and in London and we’re very proud to bring the largest selection to Manchester because it enables us to offer a really diverse range of wines by the glass and to serve the wine in perfect condition.
“We have invested a large amount financially and changed careers to set up our own business so being able to work with the Business Finance Solutions team to make sure we were taking all the right decisions was fantastic. Accessing the Business Loan has also meant that we have been able to move our plans on much more quickly and bring this fantastic new technology to Manchester.”
BFS Business Loans is a government-backed initiative that will see over £24m invested into growing businesses in Greater Manchester over the next 10 years. A condition of the loan is that it must create or protect jobs and typical loans will be from £3k to £100k in value.
